What plant looks like purslane?
The one thing important to know about purslane is that there is a "look alike" plant known as spurge, that might be mistaken for purslane, and it is poisonous. This is spurge. The stems of spurge are much thinner than purslane stems, and spurge leaves are thin, unlike purslane's thick, succulent leaves.
How do you identify purslane?
One of the keys to identifying purslane is its fleshiness. The stems are thick and succulent, reddish in color, and spread into dense mats up to 20 inches across. The leaves are succulent as well, and grow in an alternate fashion on the stem, though they may be crowded enough to appear opposite or whorled.
How do you get rid of purslane weeds?
The best method for eliminating purslane is by hand pulling. Typically, a single purslane plant will cover a large area, so you can easily clear large areas affected by purslane weed with only a little effort. Herbicide can be used on these plants as well but work best while the plants are still young.

You can tell an ornamental portulaca from a purslane by its leaves. Ornamental portulaca, often called moss rose, has more needle-like leaves than purslane foliage. The flowers also are showier, often looking either like a cactus bloom or a tiny carnation or rose.
